Yellowstone Hand Picked American Single Malt Single Barrel is today’s review but how did we get here?
I woke up this morning looking at my bar and I realized I had nothing new to review this week on the website. So I took a ride to my local liquor store and hey had a tasting of all their barrel picks going on. After walking through the bourbon aisles nothing caught my eye as the shelves were heavily picked over being it is Father’s Day Weekend. So I decided to have a few sips of a few bottles I have hesitated to pull the trigger on them.
They had two different barrel picks of Yellowstone. One coming in at 110 proof, the other coming in at 116 proof. The difference between the two of them was incredible. The 110 Proof which I opted not to buy was thin and very much an American Whiskey. We opted to buy the one that came in at 116 proof.
Whiskey Review: Yellowstone Hand Picked American Single Malt Single Barrel
ABV: 58% (116 Proof)
Age: 6 years
Single Barrel No.: SM20
Barrel Date: 7/3/2019
Distillery: Not Disclosed
Location: Indiana
Bottled By: Limestone Branch Distillery
Location: Lebanon, KY
The Nose: Aromas of honey and vanilla are obtained with a deep inhale through the nose. Secondary softer pulls reveal raisins, fudge and a subtle oak. The aroma is thin but what is there is enjoyable.
The Taste: There is a nice amount of heat present but not as much as you would expected from the 116 proof. There are notes of vanilla, tree bark, and subtle raisin on the initial sip. Subsequent sips see the addition of honey and caramel.
The Finish: A quick hit of vanilla if followed by a subtle amount of heat and black pepper. Additional there is a saltiness to the Yellowstone Single Barrel with a fleeting touch of cinnamon at the very end.
Conclusion: The primary reason why I bought this bottle was the difference between the 110 and 116 proof. It was like night & day. Now 12 hours later without the comparison this pour is thin without anything to compare it to. With that said I think this might be the last store pick I review for quite some time. There are some winners out there but many of them fall flat. It is a however a good way to support your local liquor store and I will continue to buy a few that I like, and always try something new when it comes in. But the value of a store pick review just isn’t there unless they decide the want to advertise.
In conclusion of the conclusion, this single barrel American Whiskey is enjoyable and it offers a nice change of pace but I prefer the complexity that bourbon offers versus a straight malted barley mash bill.
Score: 90
Price: $49.99 (750ml)
On a side note I didn’t light the cigar until the review was completed.
