The Aganorsa Leaf Supreme Leaf Gran Toro marks the 11th release depending on how you count. There was one store exclusive for Wooden Indian in Pennsylvania. If you count the store exclusive the number is 11.

“Supreme Leaf launched five years ago and we wanted to offer a more sophisticated look to celebrate our most exciting brand,” said Terence Reilly, vp of sales and marketing for AGANORSA Leaf, in a press release. “The packaging update is intended to capture the striking design of the original and add an elegance to the presentation. We selected a Gran Toro vitola for this special release because at 6 x 56 it will be the largest format we have ever released in this blend.”

The Cigar: Hallelujah! If there was cigar whose packaging drove me bonkers it was the MS-Paint designed Aganorsa Leaf of vibrant purple, orange and yellow. The box and band have finally been toned back to less obnoxious colors that have a more luxury feel to them. While the colors remain the same the new shades are more relaxing and the company logo is bold. The cigar features a oily wrapper with some subtle veins and a closed foot. This box pressed release has no voids of tobacco as the Supreme Leaf Gran Toro is examined with an above average weight.
The Taste: The cold draw of the Aganorsa Leaf Supreme Leaf Gran Toro is loaded with rye spice, plums and cedar while the aroma from the close foot has a vanilla like sweetness to it and an abundance of pepper which makes me sneeze as most Nicaraguan cigars do. As we pull on the cigar during the lighting process the wrapper has a nice sweetness to it.
As we smoke the first third there is a sweetness that stands out more than I recall for the Supreme Leaf. There are notes of almonds, caramel, and mocha. There is also less spice than I have experienced in past releases with a subtle red pepper. The first third is rounded out with cedar and sunflower seeds while the retrohale has some white pepper, melba toast and additional nuttiness.
Moving into the second third notes of chocolate develop that vibrant and dominant until the halfway point when they are overtaken by notes of leather and charred wood along with a growing amount of cayenne pepper. As the second third comes to a close some notes of sunflower seeds are once again present with mocha however pepper notes on the aroma and retrohale are at times eye wateringly delicious.
The last third starts off with what I expected the Supreme Leaf Gran Toro to be; a spicebomb. There are notes of cayenne pepper & red pepper with nuances of cedar, almonds, and earth. Occasionally notes of espresso make a brief appearance especially in the background of the retrohale which has more pepper and cinnamon to round things out.
Conclusion: I don’t like big ring gauge cigars and a 56 ring gauge pushes the limit unless it is box pressed which makes it more enjoyable. I’ll be honest, I see guys smoking large ring gauge cigars and I think that Freud would have had a field day. However since the release of multiple variations of a perfecto so close to each other I just felt disconnected from the brand. As a result, I was happy to purchase just three for the sake of a review. That is until I smoked them. It’s a bold statement but one made with confidence. This might not be the strongest but it is by far the best Supreme Leaf to date. If you can find a box, or two buy them! You will not be disappointed.
