Cigar Review: Patina y Viso Verdigris

Patina y Viso Verdigris marks the beginning of Patina y Viso Horny—a partnership rooted in friendship, curiosity, and a shared love for tobacco.

According to a press release, “Mo Maaili (owner of Patina Cigars) and Tyler Jeffery (owner of Viso Horny) first met by chance at Casa de Puros in Chicago. A brief conversation left a memorable impression on Tyler and years later, he heard Mo on a podcast, remembered that moment, and brought Patina cigars into the humidor he was managing.Eventuall y, the duo reconnected. Mo came out for an event, and a working relationship turned into a real friendship. When Tyler mentioned wanting to visit Nicaragua, Mo simply said, “Book the flight.” So he did.

In Estelí, they spent time learning from industry leaders like Gustavo Cura and Angel Oliva III—diving deep into blending, fermentation, and the art skill behind the leaf. After several trips, they decided to create something together.

That cigar is Verdigris—a blend shaped by time, trust, and transformation. Named after the Patina that forms on aged copper, it reflects their journey: raw, real, and evolving.”

The Cigar: No band, just a green ribbon but more on that later. The wrapper is veiny and unevenly colored especial near some of the veins. Simply put, it’s an ugly cigar. But you can’t judge a book by its cover. In the hand the cigar is heavy and firm to the touch. Under the fingers the oily wrapper feels like silk with just enough give in the foot.

The Taste: The cold draw has notes of prune, flour, and vanilla which is extremely delightful. The foot of the cigar offers a warm aroma subtle notes of prunes and manure. Once the cigar is lit there is a nice dense smoke production with prunes giving white to white pepper notes.

As we move into the first third notes of white pepper continue though the begin to mellow out as the cigar develops some chocolate notes with earthy undertones. There is also a subtle licorice and espresso that hide in the background becoming more visible from time to time. As the first third comes to a close the retrohale is smooth with added elements of honey and raisins.

The second third of the Patina y Viso Verdigris seems to flip a switch and the sweetness of the first third has disappeared. There are some citrus components, but the star of the show is the spice which has black pepper, dill and and touch of mustard seed. As we cross the halfway point some chocolate sweetness emerges again in the background underneath the aggressive but well balanced spices. The retrohale is eye wateringly delicious and despite all the spice the cigar is a perceived medium in strength.

The final third continues with spice though isn’t as defined as the second third. There are notes of red pepper and mustard seeds that really shine on the retrohale. As we move passed when the band would be some hints of licorice emerge which encourages me to deal with the mosquitos that are out in full force tonight.

Conclusion: Tyler Jeffery, this is your second brand, third release. You need cigar bands. You need to work on brand recognition because I think you are on to something good. Think about it. You make it to a list of Top 10 Cigars for 2025, all will show is a cigar with no band, no free marketing. A wasted opportunity.  I have 7 more to smoke after this review, that’s 7 cigars I won’t post to social media because there is no identifying information. It is also time to come out with a regular production cigar. But enough about my grips.

The Patina y Viso Verdigris is an outstanding cigar that if it was a regular production would definitely be in the conversation for cigar of the year. While I wouldn’t call it overly complex, there is enough going on to keep me interest until there was nothing left to hold. The cigar is real pepper bomb so if that isn’t your cup of tea, I hope you had a Happy Mother’s day back in May. For those of you who enjoy that, grab a 10 pack or two they are well worth it!
