Cigar Review: AVO Syncro 10th Anniversary

AVO Syncro 10th Anniversary. If there was one cigar that I would have bet the farm on not lasting 10 years it was the AVO Syncro. I’ll touch on this in my conclusion at the end of the review.

According to a press release which Davidoff refuses to ad us to the distribution, “The AVO Syncro 10th Anniversary Limited Edition celebrates a decade of innovation and craftsmanship. With this cigar, our Master Blenders showcase their unwavering commitment to expanding the boundaries of taste. The unique blend and distinctive vitola honour the Syncro legacy, delivering an unforgettable experience for our cigar enthusiasts around the globe.”

With the original being released in 2015 this marks a rare cigar industry occurrence, a cigar released on time.

The Cigar: It’s not often you see a box-pressed diadema so it stands out when you do come across one. The band sees a color tweak from the original release with the AVO logo front and center with the word Nicaragua underneath while a secondary silver and black band. In the hand the cigar is exceptionally light with no voids of tobacco although it feels fragile. The dark Ecuador wrapper has a few notable veins.

The Taste: The cold draw is earthy and grassy which I’ve come to expect from the factory that makes many cigar for Davidoff. The aroma from the foot and wrapper has a subtle cocoa powder but nothing really stands out so it is time to light this cigar up.

Once lit the cigar begins with some nuttiness that gives way to some nutmeg before setting on an espresso note before we even pass the nipple of the diadema. As we settle into the first third there is a dense feel to the draw though it is not as tough as the original release. There mouthfeel is has a honey like density to it with notes off coffee and leather being dominant while the retrohale is earthy.

Moving into the second third notes of coffee and leather continue to be the focal point though I times they aren’t very vibrant. Around the halfway point a subtle chocolate begins to develop which become more of a mocha by the time the second third comes to a close. There is continued leather and wood notes as well while the retrohale sees some pecans and black pepper.

As we enter the final third and remove the secondary band notes of black pepper make its way to the palate where a subtle hint of mocha holds on before espress notes take control as the cigar finishes out where it joined by wood notes. The retrohale has leather and earth as well as addition pepper.

Conclusion: I always found the original release to have a tough draw and I always struggled to keep them lit. 2 years after these were released AVO passed away from respiratory arrest and AVO cigars were without a figurehead. I believe that year I bought one of the limited editions and unless one was gifted to me I stopped smoking the brand. Like Davidoff itself the brand feels dated and without a direction.

With AVO being a musician the best way I can describe this cigar is that it lacks a hook which prevents it from being a hit. While price doesn’t play a factor in our final score there is nothing about this cigar that says $22 and in fact it hits me a as $9-$10 cigar at best. But like there is an ass for every seat and different musical genres it best you try it for yourself.
